Bakewell imports recipes from TikTok, Instagram and the web, and includes these calculators (plus more) right inside the app.
How the tin conversion works
The calculator finds the area of each tin (π × radius² for round, side × side for square, length × width for rectangular) and divides your tin by the recipe tin. If the depth of the two tins is about the same, that ratio is the multiplier for your ingredients.
If your tin is much deeper or shallower than the recipe suggests, use the multiplier as a starting point and adjust the baking time. Cakes rise more in deeper tins.
Frequently asked questions
How do I adjust a recipe for a different size tin?
Compare the area of the tin in the recipe with the tin you are using. The ratio between them is the amount to multiply every ingredient by. This calculator does the sum for you.
Do I change the baking time in a different tin?
Usually yes. A larger tin gives a thinner cake that bakes faster, so start checking earlier. A smaller, deeper tin needs longer, often at a slightly lower temperature.
How many cups of batter does my tin need?
Fill a cake tin about two-thirds full so the cake has room to rise. The calculator compares tin areas, so keep the depth similar.
What size tin is equivalent to a 9-inch round?
A 9-inch (23 cm) round tin has about the same area as a 8-inch (20 cm) square tin. Enter the sizes above to check any pair.
